Howzit!

That is a traditional South African greeting and by “traditional,” I mean, “modern day slang.” I’m Californian through and through but my Grandfather did move with his family from that wild and beautiful country. A friend of mine said that, “I have lived a thousand different lives.” If that shines through in my art; I’ll let you decide. My pursuit of photography as art started when I was hired at OneWay Boardshop when I was 18 to do catalogue, website and event photos. A couple years after I move up in the world to work for Moss Motors photographing the auto world. Shortly thereafter I took the plunge to go freelance and along with a pay cut my whole life changed forever.

Three years into my freelance career I ended up working as an event photographer for Guggenheim Partners. This 7 year role bankrolled that decade of my life allowing me to travel the world working for various brands, wedding clients and Non Profit Organizations. Living in places like Dublin, Oslo and Capetown were captivating and thrilling yet I’ve come full circle to establish myself back in the heart of California.

Over the past 15 years I’ve photographed heads of prestigious finance companies who are worth more than 200 billion dollars in assets, basketball Hall-of-Famers, the creator of Star Wars himself, and countless other world class individuals. On the other end of the spectrum, spend months with strangers, becoming family; who's livelihood is hand to mouth and may not eat in a particular week. People are what matter most, more than the images of them; developing community in my work is what I am about. Photography is an amazing art form and there are mind blowing opportunities and cool tech involved but developing personal relationships are the pinnacle for me.

Cheers!

Luke Stephen Severn.
